My Voice: Sex registry ‘does more harm than good’ (Opinion)

As citizens, we must be aware of what is going on in our Legislature. Prison is “big business;” educate yourself as to what is really happening in our society before you demand to know where every sex offender lives. America (the land of the free) is number one for incarcerating more of its citizens than any other country. There are currently 2.2 million incarcerated citizens in the nations’ prisons and jails. There are 3,432 registered sex offenders in South Dakota. Full Opinion Piece

“Your child has a better chance of getting on the sex offender registry than being harmed by a person on the registry, but we continue to waste taxes on a system that does more harm than good.”

One of the many great points made by Mrs. Schaff in this opinion piece.

Great opinion piece and the above quote is the most important reason for new offenses. If society only focuses on doing anything after an offense nothing will improve.

Let’s really push to end or amend this Registry. Lifetime banishment from society is punishment as egregious as the ostracizing of those afflicted with leprosy long ago….or more recently of those with HIV. Society also banished citizens afflicted with AIDS, but through educating, and advocacy, learned to accept the unfortunate sufferers back into the mainstream. Education, advocacy and reducing the stigma relating to crimes of a sexual nature will eventually promote common sense programs to handling sex offenses.
